Remaking a vintage album cover

I was listening to a Brazilian music playlist on Apple Music and came across this album cover:

Hyldon album cover
Album cover for Hyldon, “na rua, na chuva, na fazenda…”

I am a big fan of 1970s style (“Na Rua, Na Chuva, Na Fazenda…” came out in 1975), and it seemed like it would be pretty simple to recreate in Adobe Illustrator, for some practice. This is what I came up with:

Remake of the Hyldon album cover.

I couldn’t get the fonts exactly right, but I found something pretty close. I spent the most time trying to make the photo look more vintage. I found some instructions online about how to change the tint of the photo and add film grain, both of which I had to do in Photoshop. Even though I couldn’t get it quite how I wanted it, eventually I decided to stop fiddling with it and move on.

Looking at them next to each other like this, I think it actually turned out pretty well. And I’m still amazed at how much I can learn just from copying what already exists.
